Evolving Thoughts

When the pump is primed, it is easier to draw from a depth unseen, but only sensed.

My next most favorite editorial comments are nearly the same (the choice of words is determined by the editor’s ego) “awkward” or “reword”.
Personally, I prefer the use of awkward because it has more letters in it than reword. Only lately have I come to realize that I have been expecting too much. I used to hope that editors could write down an alternative to the awkward passage or offer a suggestion of how to reword a particular phrase or sentence. But that would be asking too much of most editors. How could I ever think such a thought as t ask an editor to write? After all, who would edit what they would write?

A problem I have with revising someone else’s writing or proofing another’s editing is that I am not always sure that either of them really meant.

Our team needs you, in order to have someone to blame.

Editors are single-faceted individuals that can only work in one mode at a time.

Why is it that people who don’t work have more tools than they know how to use, while workers can’t get the tools they need to do their jobs?

I read what you wrote. I just wanted you to know that. If anyone wants to know the facts, they can ask me, but we both know that no one will ask be because they believe you.

Keep those covering you informed of what you are doing. That way you will know whether they will cover your next move or not.

I have no authority to make anyone do anything, but I am responsible for making sure everything gets done.

My problem is that I work as fast as I can, trying to get everything done at once. I need to slow down and work on only one aspect of a single task at a time. I need to ensure the accuracy of each step before I move on to the next step. This way, each step can build on the previous one. There will be no steps skipped and no need to backtrack.

There must be a secret school of poor management that produces poor managers. I have seen these poor managers in several different companies and in many different positions. They all act and react in the same way. They don’t have any plans, but they are always changing the way things are done. They can’t even do their own job, but they are telling others how to do their jobs. The only thing they manage to do is to drive out the good workers (those who can think for themselves and have new ideas) and create an unhealthy dependency on them by the remaining helpless workers.
It isn’t that these poor managers haven’t any skills, they do. However, they are typically one of the boys. They consistently look good (at least on paper). They say the words that people want to hear. They are highly skilled as shifting the blame to someone else. They know whose ass they need to kiss and they know how to do it right.

What upsets me most about editors is that they are inconsistent.

Humility is only a virtue when someone else experiences it.

One major drawback with “state-of-the-art” is that information always lags behind by either months or years.

The only time you invite a conversation is when you have something derogatory or demeaning to say to me.

When someone talks to you the way you talked to me, you go crying to the boss and tell him how terribly you were treated.

I find your reaction interesting when I am guilty of the same thing that you are also guilty of.

The editor mindset: A gleeful grin spreads across their face as an error is duly noted in crimson.

You don’t come seeking clarification as much as you come to point out my failings.

When bulk is preferred to brevity, payment had better be by the pound.

The older I get, the more of what I have learned is no longer relevant.

Management that creates another loop by inserting a non-productive individual in a position, which they are unqualified for, impedes production.

Control is like an outfielder calling for a ball, “It’s mine! It’s mine”, until something goes wrong or something has to be done. They what usually happens is backpedaling, finger pointing, and whose who said they were in control saying, “It’s your problem, you do something about it”.

I am not really sure what to think about management that refuses to provide the necessary tools for workers to perform their jobs, purely because someone has been offended.

When what a worker thinks is more important than what he/she does on the job, there is something wrong with the priorities.

Every day I waste time (company time and my time) being unproductive because management is more concerned with the “feelings” of one individual than they are with producing work.

Why are some people afraid of new technology? It isn’t that they really fear technology because these people drive cars, use hair dryers, and operate various products of technology on a daily basis. But for some reason, they are afraid of new technology. Is that because they don’t want to learn something new, or is it because they are afraid of what they don’t understand?
There is always some apprehension and reluctance to learn a new way to do the same task. Often times the new technology is intimidating and unfamiliar. It is most often these aspects that deter people from learning skills and using tools to improve their productivity and increase their marketability in the job market.
At the speed of technical advancement increases and technology reaches into more and more work environments, those who reject new technology will one day be displaced by it.

Life is an adjustment.

The reason kids can fool their parents so easily isn’t because parents are so dumb, it’s because the parents want to believe what their kids say is true.

People often establish structures and procedures out of ignorance or out of knowing they will never be used or followed.

I know a company where they can’t even agree twice the same way as to how a cover is to look. They can’t agree on  how to count the pages. They can’t even agree on how to spell a word (Tech Pak,Tek Pack, TekPak), and even after it is done one way, it gets changed again by someone else.

I just encountered my first generic form. It was a blank form that had all of the blanks filled in. I was told that if I wanted a generic, generic form, I would just have to white-out the filled-in information.

I have noticed that usually when I am shown a “good” example, it us usually something the person did who is showing it. And when a “bad” example is shown, it is usually someone else’s.

Why is it that people view anything they didn’t plant as being a weed?

When I learn to stop spending on myself and begin spending for others, then I will have taken another step in the direction God desires me to go.

That which is untrue must be violently defended.

The primary task of a Technical Writer is to translate the technicalese, unjumble the jargon, and educate the editor to produce an understandable, usable, and useful document.

You played your part and I played mine. The game is now over. Can we still treat each other as a human being?

When people are asked to put in writing and sign what is coming out of their mouths, they usually do two of three things. First, they begin attacking because they have been asked to legally affirm what they know isn’t true. Second, they change what they had been saying in an attempt to not have to admit to what they said one breath ago. And if they talk fast enough and loud enough, they hope anyone listening will have forgotten what they had said previously.
The Third thing very seldom occurs and that is they write down exactly what they previously said, sign it, and date it.

Those who have sat in the cesspool the longest are least offended by its smell.

Those most intimate with the stink smell it the least.

Those closest to the stink often cannot even smell it.

Adults are just children who think that they are grow up.

Children are the way they know they are. Adults are who others think them to be.

The newest people to a company often have the clearest perspective of that business.

I am growing stronger in my spirit. I am being strengthened down to my very soul. The strength welling up inside of me will not allow me to be broken. I may be shaken, but my root holds fast to Him whom I trust. He will sustain me and uphold me.

The future is wide open and limits no one.

It isn’t that nobody cares. It is just that nobody wants to do what is needed.

Subcontractors are often treated as subhumans.

Prime contractors primary concern is to protect themselves and their interests.

Often people doing the work are not given the information they need to get the work done.

Unless an answer must be beaten out of you, your response is never believed.

A problem I have s that if I don’t know something, I feel I should learn it. Yet, if others don’t know something, they don’t care.

This may come as news to you, but the realm of knowledge does extend beyond your ears.

Evasive Writing 404* - A requirement for all Electrical Engineers. Learn the essentials of how to write specifically about generalities. Be able to write pages without saying anything.
 *Redundancy 301 is a prerequisite**
**Redundancy 301 must have been previously completed

What has not been experienced is either glorified or vilified.

Only asses think about covering theirs.

Some people make all the right sounds, but all they will ever be is an imitation of the real thing.

I needed to get a haircut for an upcoming interview. My wife called to make an appointment for me with the lady who usually cut my hair. I couldn’t believe it when I was told that she did not have an appointment available until the day of the interview. So, I reluctantly said it would be alright to get my hair cut by someone else. The appointment was made for Friday.
On my way out the door for my appointment, my wife’s last words of instruction were, “Don’t let her ruin it (my hair). Tell her just to trim it”. It isn’t that that no one else had ever cut my hair. There was a time when it didn’t matter to me who cut my hair. I would just walk into the nearest hair cutting place and ask for a haircut.
But that was over three years ago and that was before Una. I have had my hair cut by many people of both sexes. It wasn’t until Una cut my hair that I was favorably impressed with the after result and my wife raved about how my hair looked. As a result, I faithfully asked for Una to cut my hair every time I needed a haircut.
This evening would be different. There would be another woman doing for me what Una had always done so well.
As I walked to the door, I could see Una working. I slithered into a seat, hoping that she wouldn’t see me and that I wouldn’t have to look her in the eye. I felt like I was cheating on my wife.
The lady who was to cut my hair was running late. During my wait, Una came up and said, “You can come back now”. I said, “I would really like that, but my appointment is with someone else”.
As it all turned out, Una cut my hair. It looked fine and I could still look her in the eye.

I have met, but cannot understand (except possibly because of laziness) why a manager would not know either equipment or personnel limits.
How can someone manage without knowing either the equipment or the people they oversee? How can decisions be made without knowing the facts? Sure, decisions can and are made without knowing or understanding the entire scope of operations, but how much improvement could be realized through knowing?
What usually happens is people know only what they had to learn t get there; and once they have arrived, they don’t learn anything more.

The principles of good communication never change.

On Thursday, my wife prayed for a company where I had applied for a job. She prayed that those making the decisions would come to their senses and realize that I am good and that they shouldn’t look further.
I had talked with the personnel director just the day before and he told me that I wouldn’t hear anything until next week.
Within the very hour (possibly within minutes of her prayer), I got a call from the personnel director, who set up an appointment for me with the executive vice-president.
Now, I am nervous again and I am trying to control my excitement.

I find I have to cover my ass when I am dealing with asses.

I am not asking for you to hold my hand. What I am asking for is a map so I’ll know where I am going and know when I get off track.

Some people forget or fail to understand that businesses are physical entities.

Publications people need to maintain a perspective. Printed documents exist to present information. The document is a byproduct of the process. It is not the reason for the product or process. The document exists as the medium of convenience for disseminating information. The product or process can and does exist without the document. What is true is that the document cannot and does not exist without the product or process.

You believe that merely because you perform the task that the task therefore must be important.

I am told to stand on my own two feet and do the job I was hired to do. Except, whenever I try to do my job, I get beat down, kicked in the head, and stabbed in the back. I am always told later that what I had done was not the acceptable process. In find out that I am responsible to ensure the quality of other people’s work. I am given that responsibility because I care what the final product looks like.

Whether I get out of bed or not, the day will still begin. It will begin with or without me. I realize this all very well, but it is so warm and comfortable under these blankets.

I have never worked in place like this before. Nobody cooperates, no one wants to do what they’re supposed to do, and nobody wants to give anyone else any information. Nobody gets along, everyone is opinionated, and everyone else is always wrong. I had a horrible thought, maybe that is why I am here!

Like a deceptive rain cloud, so too is a promising interview that results in no job offer.

I made the call. There was no answer. I have to go to the bathroom now.

It used to be that if you wanted to buy a good car, you’d buy an American. Now, if you can’t afford a good car, you buy American.

Personnel managers are an unusual lot. They say and do whatever they have to in order to hire the people needed. They set up interviews as quickly as they can and then take as long as they want to get an answer back to those interviewed. They are in the people business, but people aren’t their business.

Some moves are not moves forward.

I really admire people who really want to sound like an authority on what they’re reading, even though they don’t know what they are talking about.

At the heart of good management is effective personal communication.

I had to laugh. I passed two adjacent offices and caught snippets of each conversation. Two people were in each office discussing different aspects of a common problem.
What needed to happen was for both people in each group to come together and resolve the problem.

Management that functions independent of the workers is ineffective at best.

I must have the wrong attitude. When the weather is bad (ice or snow), I get an early start to give myself the extra time I know I’ll need. Others seem to only use the bad weather as an excuse for sleeping in or being late.

I believe that after 3:30 a.m. the power company speeds up the line voltage rate. Since most people aren’t awake at this time, only a few people know this. I know this fact because I have been awake at this time and have seen the digital alarm clock take minute jumps as fast as I blink my eyes.

I believe that after 3:30 a.m. the power company speeds up the line voltage rate. Since most people aren’t awake at this time, only a few people know this. I know this fact because I have been awake at this time and have seen the digital alarm clock take minute increments as fast as I blink my eyes.

While lying in bed, the time I am getting up is always in the near future. Once out of bed, the time I should have gotten out of bed was always a few minutes earlier.

There is nothing written that having been edited cannot be re-edited.

It isn’t that I can’t fit in with the other employees here. It is just that whenever I do, I quickly become bored.

There is the matter of “the call”. I am awaiting the resultant decision from a job interview. The dilemma of whether to call or not call creates an internal emotional roller coaster. If it is a positive answer, I want to know as soon as possible. But, if the answer is negative, I don’t really want to know.
So, here I sit in the emotional ether of both hope and dread. It is a state of emotional tension that can only be resolved by “the call”. The result of which will be either ecstasy or depression. Will I be strong enough to take charge and make the call, or will I wait for it to come?

I have the most problems with people that I don’t have a problem with.

Some words convey thoughts.
Other words require thought.

Those who do not take the time to teach, must then always take the time to correct.

You may be a licensed editor, but that doesn’t guarantee you editorial license.

When an editor is confronted with facts and hard evidence, contrary to their editorial preference, they just throw up their hands and say, “Do it however you want!”

People seem taken aback when you answer them honestly and say, “No, I don’t trust you”. When you tell them that, they don’t know what to do. Usually, they will try to make you change your mind. They will use guilt, threats, and pleading to get you to trust them. Seldom if ever do they (unless they are genuine) do anything tangible (like asking you what they have to do) to prove their sincerity.

It is a sad reflection on my current employer when those I don’t work for are more interested in me than those I do work for.

A life lived on hope must constantly be shored up because of disappointments and setbacks encountered.

Long after the pain has gone, the scar still remains. Touching that scar brings back all of the feelings in a deluge of emotions.

Poor editors change.
Good editors refine.

I am glad an editor wasn’t around when God created the earth.

Editors sometimes arbitrarily change something purely to exercise their control.

When an editor makes a change, don’t even bother to discuss it. They already know, better than you, what you meant to say.

Editors need a certain degree of schizophrenia in order to function properly.

Editors are often the last bastion for rules that no one else has followed for years.

For some reason, I just don’t fit in here. I can’t say the right things and I can’t do the right things.

I am a dying breed.
I am of those who say what they mean and mean what they say.
If I have a problem with someone, I talk to that person.
I confront a problem head on.
I have pride in the work that I do.
I do not waiver.
I try to do my best.
I care.

Editors believe that everything can be edited.

I am not long for here. I just don’t fit in.

You said you have a reputation for changing gobbledygook into readable material. To be truthful with you, I never ever heard that except from your lips.

I probably read it somewhere but I don’t remember it and that is why I think that I am the first one to think of it.

If you really want to know what a company thinks about its employees and how it treats them, go into the bathroom and take a look around. What you see there is the true reflection of the company’s attitude toward the employees.

You say what you want, but you don’t provide what is needed to produce what you want.

Editors exercise what they have called “editorial preference”. Everyone else just says they are being picky or just being a pain.

Editors have preferences
Writers have no rights.

Editors somehow believe that they know more than the one doing the writing.

Editing is only a process, not the end product.

Editors have preferences
Writers have prerogatives.

Editors prefer sorting through the plethora of English rules to select varying nuances, allowing them to change as much as they can.

The only time I really knew where I stood was when I was lost.

You never really know where you stand until you are lost.

People are always trying to give you more work than you can handle. It is up to you to determine what percentage of the workload given to you, you will support. People will adjust their demands to meet your work effort. Whenever you work more, they will give you more work.
You draw the line, and then stick to it. Make them cross over the line to come to you. Once they are on your side of the line, make them conform to your rules.
Once you cross over the line you have drawn, you are then on their side and subject to their rules.

The measure of affluence is no longer what you have, but it is what you waste.

There are those who always want and always ask for more and more, yet give nothing in return. Ad long as you meet their demands, they appear satisfied. But you will see it coming. They just keep asking for more. When you cannot or will not meet their demands, they move on to someone else and begin all over again.

You tell me yourself what your “reputation” is. What you may be unaware of is that your expressed reputation is not the same reputation expressed by others.
I somehow doubt that both reputations are true. Your expressed reputation may be what you hope others would believe and your reputation with others is probably the way it really is.

Disneyland Publications
All input gladly accepted, in any form or format.
Changes cheerfully accepted at any time.
No deadline is too unreasonable.

The more one has to talk about something, the more likely you are not to like it. And the person knows that if they don’t fast enough, you will realize that.

And there was light, and those who had formerly been in darkness said, “Oh, my goodness!” (Or maybe something a little more graphic.)

Be leery of those telling you “confidential” or “just so you’ll be aware” tales. They may be genuinely giving you important information, or they may be up to something.
Discernment of the individual’s motives is crucial. What might be perceived as genuine “caring”, may only be a tool for spreading strife and alienating you from co-workers.

Justification never got the job done.

Finger pointing never got the job finished.

Finger pointing never got the task finished.

Finger pointing never got the work finished.

Prostitution Publications
We do it quick and dirty.
Tell us how you want it, and we’ll do it.
No demand is too outrageous.
Kick us, beat us, degrade us, and we’ll take more.

People who exist longer than anyone else are called something unique: old.

People who remain productive and active longer than most people are considered to be very special.

Pride in a job well done is reward enough.
Pride for the sake of tradition is sick.

Ignorance is self-perpetuating.

I enjoy music that isn’t always telling me something.

Music should be enjoyed for the sake of the music itself.

No matter how trash is packaged, it remains garbage.
It may be made more appealing to the eye, but the nose still knows.

If I had a rocket launcher, I’d use it on you and put you where the sun doesn’t shine.

You are probably tired of having people tell you how nice or attractive you look, so I won’t bore you with what you have already heard.

I bust my rear so you can sit on yours.
I work overtime so you can take your time.

I guess that if you can’t justify yourself, nobody else can.

I am dealing with assholes! They sit on their asses and destroy whatever they touch! Their only purpose is to produce more work for others to do. They’re not happy unless they are causing problems and the more people involved, the happier they are.

Ignorance never has to know anything.

I am never given information. I am only given work. And if I should need information to do that work, well, that is just too bad!

My time-warp machine was unceremoniously dented on my last trip home. I got into my time-warp machine and passed through the first time gate. I am not sure what happened next. I either passed too close to a dreaded time reversal zone or else bumped into a solid time block. Regardless of what caused it, the damage was done and I couldn’t reverse it.

Why is it that people would rather be led into deception than to walk in the truth?

Those who can’t, have no problem sounding like they already have.

How empty a full life can be.

For everyone who has lived the dream, thousands had died in the shadow of that dream.

Some people deserve raises and other people demand raises. In the end, you only get what they give you and besides. You don’t even get all of it anyway.

The cuter one is, the fewer qualifications are necessary.

I didn’t know you when you were somebody. But now that you are a nobody, I would like to get to know you.

This place is so Mickey Mouse that its name should be changed to Disneyland.

Editors – the imperfect attempting to ensure perfection, at least in their own minds.

You’re like a sneeze waiting to happen.

It’s been said that you’re a different breed. If I were you, I wouldn’t tell everyone because you could almost pass for a human. But if you have papers, then it might not be bad to advertise.

Not knowing anything never stopped you from talking about it.

Those who don’t know what they’re talking about can talk endlessly about it. Since they don’t know what they’re talking about, they never know when they have covered the topic adequately.

Some conversations are not conversations at all, but are merely verbal thinking.

Some people look for people so the person being looked for will find the one that is said to be looking. This type of person usually tells someone other than the one they are looking for, “When you see Some-or-such Who that I am looking for him/her.
All this does is starts a game. The game is played something like this:
 1. The “looker”, being too lazy to write a message, tells the “human notepad” a message to relay to the “lookee”.
 2. If the “human notepad” forgets to tell the lookee, then the notepad can be blamed for what the looker failed todo.
 3. If the notepad conveys the message, then the lookee must play the game too.
 4. The lookee’s part of the game is to go and search out the lookee.
This game can continue indefinitely, providing neither the looker nor the lookee find each other and the human notepad doesn’t get frustrated and keeps playing.

I am in quite a wonderful work environment. I am always filled with wonder when I try to figure out how things ever get done.
The word processors can’t process words.
 The reproduction cred doesn’t reproduce.
 Editors write.
The engineers don’t know what they’re doing.
 The managers don’t manage.
Those that are to ensure policy is followed change the policies.
And everyone knows how to do my job better than I do.

I am seriously convinced that truck’s tires are stone filled, with holes to fling said stones at car windshields, once highway-speeds are attained.

Why does it seem that people are much more likely to criticize than to compliment? Kindness is quashed and abusiveness is encouraged. Insults are often exchanged instead of pleasantries.

Beware of those encouraging you to do what you initially feel that you shouldn’t do. What is perceived as generosity or kindness may often be only a snare to entrap you. The veneer of kindness masks the deceptive motives of the purveyor of the token of kindness.
Often the only one doing the offering is already ensnared in the trap and is only interested in corrupting or destroying another. Only the benefits to you are discussed. Obviously you must want, need, or have to have it and they will try in more ways than one to convince you.
Sometimes they just want to watch you all. Often times they just want to get some incriminating evidence on you in order to manipulate or gain control over you.
Look at the hand that is not being extended to you and see what it holds. Often what is offered openly is secretly self-serving.

If you aren’t going to do your job, get out of my way so I can do my job in spite of you.

When you are able to get work done without having to wait on someone else to do it for you, a change in policy or procedure must be made.

It isn’t bad enough that no comprehensive policy exists, but whatever policy has been established is changes as quickly as it is disseminated.

If people find out that you are good, they adjust your schedule to reduce the amount of time they had previously allowed for you.

I can’t win. When I do it, you don’t like it.
When I change it, you change what I changed.
When I don’t change it, it isn’t right.
When you do it, you tell me to check your work.

When it happens to you, it is degrading.
When it happens to someone else, it is humbling.

It is an eye-opening experience to be in a department and having my boss giving out kudos for a job well-done and not having any idea who even did the job.

People keep pushing and edging me to my limit. It is a constant struggle with people asking and demanding more and more.

Appreciation quickly turns to expectation.

The only time I am made to feel apart here, is when I am drawn and quartered.

People often ascribe more importance to their work in the hope that others will ascribe more importance to them.

I used to be a technical writer. Now, I am merely a technical transcriber.

The sign above my name said: TECHNICAL WRITING/EDITING. I feel it should be changed to: Technical Transcribing/Editorial Meddling.

Why is it that people don’t listen to what someone else has to say? Almost as soon as I say what I plan on doing or intended to do, I am told that I don’t want to do it. That person may also go on to explain what I should want and why. I don’t believe that I ever asked for either their opinion or suggestion.
And you don’t get to say you don’t know what I am talking about either. You know what I am saying is true and you know it.

While you are busy covering your rear, you can still get stabbed in the back.

Beware of those who are recognized and rewarded by supervisors, yet despised and avoided by coworkers. That individual is a climber and prefers climbing over the bodies of coworkers.

A business where the most productive event is a meeting is in a state of decline.

Managers have a unique way of stifling those who show any initiative.

It is a rare manager indeed who rewards workers according to effort instead of perceived performance.

Old ties shade decisions.

Old ties imperceptibly shade decisions.

Cynicism is the last dying gasp of caring.

Those who help are those who hurt first.

Initiative is not rewarded as consistently as is compliance.

Another definition of a “dangling participle” is an editor hung in effigy.

What one prefers to do becomes a problem when it comes time to actually do it.

Progress often takes a back seat to process.

I have not yet attained an editor’s mindset.
I do not yet believe that I am a god (let alone the big “g”).
I am not yet knowledgeable about every aspect of life.
I am not yet infallible.

I am not yet the center of all.

Editors are called edheads.

Those who an do the most work are typically given the most work to do.

When weathermen get it right, they still can’t get it right.

Success is not always all that it appears to be. Often success is the visible indication of unspoken things.

Those who change their mind after having made a decision are people who can learn and grow.

Getting “locked in” to doing things only one way is fine, if that one is the best way. Getting locked in purely because it was the best choice at that time is no consolation when a lack of change stifles progress.

When the old way is good enough, only the old think it is good.

Talk is only for those who can’t do it.

When the way things work doesn’t work, why not change it?

The only good idea is your own idea.

For people to work together, there must be a common understanding.

People who like to talk, are seldom concerned with knowing all the facts. Only knowing one fact is enough.

Initiative is seen as tantamount to subversion.

Don’t ever offer advice to someone who doesn’t ask for it because if you aren’t asked, I can guarantee your advice will go unheeded and unappreciated.

Starting anew is an exciting and challenging opportunity. However, a new start with old people is just asking for trouble.

Your performance is only as good as your last superhuman sacrifice today.

I am convinced the sole purpose of editors is to frustrate writers to the point where writers stop writing, thus making their job easier.

It is interesting to observe employees during a power outage. Some people stop working regardless of what they were doing. Others stop because they cannot continue working without power. And others just shift work to another area. Some employees are not affected until the phone lines go dead.

Savvy mangers who don’t know say, “You work it out”.

People asking for advice seldom hear what is said, unless it agrees with what they wanted to do or want to hear.

People asking for advice seldom hear what is said, unless it aligns with what they wanted to do or want to hear.

I think a better response to a request for advice would be to ask what they are thinking about doing and then proceed from there.

God bless America because no one else will.

It is better to let those in control think they are in control.

It is better to let those who say they are in control think they are in control.

Needed information is often not provided because of fear of having to clarify information.

My purpose is to produce pretty, voluminous documents.

Those who knowingly change that which they do not understand in order to conform everything to them will one day make a wonderful manager for a company that produces mediocre products.

Encouragement is only for the weak.

Some people appear transparent to throw off those who aren’t observant.

Those who have nothing lose nothing.

Even snakes grin like you do.

Tainted by you. I will never be the same. Even though you are no longer around, the affects you had on me linger on. You have distorted my perspective and tainted my outlook on life.

Only give to get. Never give to give up.

I could say the same for you, but then I would be as ass just like you.

When I have to fight to do someone else’s job, why even help?

Lack of knowledge has never stopped anyone from telling you how to do your job.

Changes are only to come from the top down.

When you do what has to be done to complete a task, you are establishing a dangerous precedent. The danger lies in whether you did the work that someone else failed to do. If you did the work that someone else didn’t do, you may have to do that same work time and time again.

It may seem strange, but if you were to provide what is requested in the timeframe given, you would receive no credit. However, if you provide what was requested months after it was due, you’re a local hero.

People who aren’t competent get degrees.

People who aren’t technically competent get degrees.

The ironic thing about success is that it is only measured against failure.

The ironic thing about successes are that they are only measured against failures.

Working here is fun. Trying to get something done is frustrating.

Working without a standard is like trying to navigate without a reference. There is no way to tell if you are going in the right direction and whenever the winds of opposition blow, there will always be a change in course.

Editing by committee is like being gang-raped. After a while, there is only numbness and wondering who is next.

Editing by committee is like being gang-raped. After a while, there is only numbness and wondering if there is another one.

Those who take the initiative on their own may have to share the glory, but they will never have to share the blame.

When people are being invited, I am never thought of.
When people are not being invited, I am always first.

Revenge is a salve to the tortured soul.

Revenge is a tonic to the tortured soul.

If left to itself, the mind forgets past pains and beautifies the ugly. Yet, if continually reminded, the mind will distort the events and make what happened seem worse than it was.

People who believe the words they speak are often more deceived that those who hear the words.

I would find it laughable if it weren’t true. You not only expect but require me to establish and adhere to a firm, fixed, rock-solid schedule. That is no major problem, except that everything around me is in a plasma state of flux.
My rock-solid schedule becomes like a rock in the ocean that disappears below the surface with every high tide.

The choice is yours. You may take it personally or see it merely as an unthinking act.
When someone does something unkind to you, you must decide how it is going to affect you. You can take it personally, believing it was done intentionally or you can brush it off and say it would have happened to anyone who happened to be where you were at the time.

You aren’t worth even the energy it takes to think about you.

You only like it when you are in control.

Don’t tell people what you have learned about them. There is no reason their paranoia should be replaced with fear.

Publications people are paper prostitutes.

I used to be a technical writer. Then I thought I was a technical editor. Now I just seem to be a transmitter.

People often use words to fortify what they are not.

Any group that does not function as a whole spends as much time fighting itself as it does doing its tasks.

Technical writers without a backbone or without a boss who had no backbone becomes a technical prostitute.
Technical prostitutes have no pride, no emotions, no brain, and no worth. They perform unnatural acts for uncaring and unsympathetic people.
Editors and engineers force them to perform degrading acts. When the exchange is finished, the writer knows it will happen again and again.

People prefer to mindlessly adhere to an outdated standard than to make a change to improve things.

People prefer to mindlessly adhere to an unworkable standard than to make a change to improve things.

NOTE: Nothing is what it says it is, unless otherwise specified.

I’m glad I never knew you. I’m sad I never knew you.

Any personal gain has a personal cost.

Those spending in advance of what they anticipate getting seldom get what they expected.

Spending what you don’t have to get what you want always sounds good, until payment is due.

Assumption is presumption on the part of the assumer.

People who don’t want to do it right only go through the motions.
People who don’t know what they are doing only go through the motions.

Going through the motions is more of a social ritual than a functional process.

When the “correction” causes more work than the problem, then there is real trouble.

Innocence is just inexperienced callousness.

Problems must be addresses in specific terms. Those who are the problem don’t see themselves as the problem. The phrase, “And you know who you are” has no effect on them.

There are users and there are pushers. Each has their specialized techniques. A user uses people to advance their personal goal and a pusher pushes others into endeavors designed only to make their self look good.

Life is an obstacle course that must be run every day and every night it is changed.

When the integrity of the worker is compromised, the quality of the product suffers.

Are clothes an extension of what the person is, or are clothes a covering for what the person is not?

I have found my purpose in life! The purpose of my life is to let people disappoint me.

Danger only exists for those who come after.

A working mother generally gets the short end of the stick.
A housewife gets the dirty end of the stick.

A friend is a person who remains a friend even after you are no longer around.

A true friend is not one who you call a friend, but one who calls you friend.

The one who is first doesn’t care about those who follow.

A friend – someone who just comes to see you and lets you do the talking.
              - someone who wants to see you for no reason.

People are more interested in knowing than they are interested in learning.

Any gain costs something.

Every gain costs something.

If you care for someone else, you are four times as likely to get hurt.

Those in life who have what they want have taken it.

Promises are sort of like farts. You know something was supposed to be there, but it wasn’t what you were led to believe it would be.

Promises are only for those who believe in Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny.

“Liar”! That word hurts the speaker more than the one who spoke it because the one who hears it already knew. It is only the speaker who is shocked.

“Liar”! That word hurts the speaker more than it does the one of whom it is spoken because the one who hears it already knew. It is only the speaker who is shocked.

There are those individuals in life that have been so beaten and battered they feel that that is their sole purpose for living. The feel they must be happy to be the doormats of society. Happiness to them is being taken advantage of, and fulfillment to them is not getting what they want.

Life is unfair only to those who (mistakenly) believe it is supposed to be fair.

When you do less for one day what I do five days a week, you cease to be able to function.

You are the major cause for me believing that I should never expect to get what I want. You have deceived me so often that I don’t even hope for more than what little I have. And even at that, I feel guilty when I get to do something I want to do. Then you wonder why I am not more forceful and assertive.

A right not fought for becomes a privilege for a few.

I may be able to be replaced, but you can be eliminated.

I am compelled to improve what everyone else thinks is OK.

How many people that you call friend call you friend?

In every relationship, there is always one who gives more than the other. In an ideal relationship, the individual who gives more alternates evenly between the two.

Those you hire will be those who replace you.

Honesty and integrity are soon replaced with reality,

People are often outraged at the actions of others, when they would do the very same if they were in their place.

The ear has two sets of rules. One set of rules apply to yourself and the other applies to everyone else.

Prejudice is a personally limiting factor.

I think the word “borrow” needs to have its definition expanded to include two widely used meanings. The first expanded definition would be: to take without permission. When some people “ask” to borrow something, they aren’t so much asking permission as they are telling you that they are taking it. (Saying no is not an option.) And the second expansion would include: a change in ownership. When some people “borrow” something, it immediately becomes theirs (“use” also fits). When you ask for it back, they seem hurt or insulted.

You have dreams, and that is fine, but what bridge are you building to get you there?

Those who stay behind do not change. Those who move on will never be the same again.

Crisis Management – where a crisis is required before it can be addressed.

Excellence is not allowed, but is still expected.

I only ask for the impossible when I need the impossible.

The culturing of creativity requires discipline.

Crisis Manager – the one who manages to come out o top in a crisis.

Thoughts flow, but the ink doesn’t.

Green pine boughs undulate in the breeze like seaweed in the ocean. An English Sparrow can be seen darting among the branches. Its short, shrill, staccato call can repeatedly be heard. The greenness of the pine tree stands in sharp contrast to the deep blue cloudless sky.
Obnoxiously, humanity thrusts itself upon this serene scene. The drone of jets overhead, the din of traffic nearby, and the whirling of air conditioners all but stifle the fading tranquility.
Lunch time is over and it is back to work again. The cry of a Blue Jay echoes off the building as I walk through the doors.

We make the perfect couple.
You lie and I believe it.

If you don’t make the effort to improve yourself, no one else will do it for you.

If you won’t make the effort to improve yourself, no one else will do it for you.

If you don’t make the effort to improve yourself, no one else can do it for you.

If you won’t make the effort to improve yourself, no one else can do it for you.

Businesses prefer to hire people with skills rather than having to teach people skills.

What you fail to understand is that your opinion is only important to you.

In order for a system to work, it must meet several criteria. The system must first be workable. That is, the people who do the work must be able to accomplish their tasks. The system must have a form, but be flexible. Yet it needs to be consistent each time the same task is performed.
    Workable systems must be:
 Functional
 Flexible
 Formed
 Repeatable

People don’t like to be corrected. They prefer to be wrong rather than being corrected. Maybe they believe that if they don’t know any better, nobody else knows either.

Ignorance is not doing it wrong. That is not knowing any better. Rather, ignorance s not wanting to learn to do it right.

People generally prefer ignorance to correction. They prefer to be wrong in the eyes of others, but be right in their own.

You may have the last word, but the judge has the last say.

Nobody is as impressed with you as you are with yourself.

When you don’t give a customer anything “extra”, then you have nothing to bargain with when the customer is dissatisfied with the “minimum” you gave them.

Shrewdness and laziness are often synonymous.

People are the result of what they think.

The number of balls one can keep in the air is determined first by ability and second by strength.

It is important to remember that the number of balls one can get up in the air, eventually they must all comeback down again.

Helplessness
Being stopped on the highway while watching the approaching vehicle in your rear-view mirror not slowing down.

I dislike disagreeing with someone who I know is right.

People only seem interested in the end result. They aren’t interested in the process, unless they will have to be the one to do it.

Excluding family, most people cannot name two people who are willing to take the time to make the effort to help them improve themselves.

The Commuter Paradox
The farther one travels, the less one sees. Because the farther one has to travel, the faster one goes.
The faster one goes, the less that is seen.

A man often pours his life into working in order to fulfill the requests that his wife has mouthed during wishful thinking. Because he knows that what she wants, he can’t do and it is only through working more that he can pay for what she wants.

A mess is more than one thing left out at a time.

Those who live in the past generally live there alone.

Living in the past means missing the present.

Some people pass on strengths and others pass on weaknesses.

It is possible to pay less and receive comparable quality. It is also possible to pay less and receive inferior quality.

Price is often used as the standard for quality, rather than quality itself.

When no due date is given, no document is returned.

Typically, the minimum is the maximum done.

Ignorance is bliss because it usually requires less effort than it does to learn.

Everyone is concerned about quality, but nobody is doing anything about it.

Consider well the consequences of actions before you do it, even if you are just doing what you are told.

The failure of most educators is that they teach what they want others to learn, rather than teaching how to learn.

Most people can’t learn on their own because they have always been taught what they needed to know.

Either be up front with me, or do it behind my back; but don’t let me ever find you out.

Always believe what you don’t hear.

The following “having it” thoughts have been condensed for purposes of reading:
If it is worth having, it is worth waiting for.
It I want it, I can’t have it.
Anything I want, someone else already has.
If I want to have it, I’ll take it.
If it is worth having, why wait?

If I have a need for it, then I have to have it.

Often times, while waiting for someone better to come along, that which is at hand is overlooked.

Often times, while waiting for something better to come along, that which is at hand is overlooked.

If you picked up every penny you saw, you would have more than from only picking up the occasional nickel or dime.

The quality of life can change so very quickly. What was taken for granted one moment may only exist as a memory or a dream.

Those who don’t know their job, attack those around them to keep them from finding out they can’t do their job.

By intimidating others, you don’t have to defend yourself.

Those who work hard and ask for nothing are expected to work hard and get nothing.

Those who work hard and ask for nothing are expected to work hard and receive nothing.

Those who are “in” never ask those who are “out” to come in. Because if they aren’t “in”, they can’t be asked because if they were “in”, they wouldn’t be “out” and; therefore, wouldn’t have to be asked.

Getting acclimated has two schools of thought.
1. Hold the hand until you are confident they know what they need to know to do what they need to do.
2. Throw them in and let them sink or swim on their own. What they don’t know they will learn.

Experience is not the best teacher or else why do so many people keep making the same mistakes over and over again?

It has been said that happiness is a decision, but with you around I don’t even have the choice.

Management doesn’t make a move until the workers have established a policy.

As long as you side with someone, you will have no problems, as long as they feel they need you.

People prefer being taught, to learning.

Being right doesn’t make the task any easier or get the job done any faster.

I know that if I look for something long enough in the wrong places, someone else will find it.

When asked to do the impossible in an unrealistic amount of time, only perfection will be accepted and no appreciation shown.

Those who have money don’t worry about it; and those who don’t have it think about nothing else.

If you understand it, you don’t have to think about it.
If you don’t understand it, thinking about it won’t help.

Attention to detail is fine, providing that is your job.

People have pat answers as to why they do things a certain way. They feel their reasoning is justification enough to continue doing it the way they have done it all along.

New ways or changes are not well tolerated by those who are familiar or comfortable with doing it “the old way”.

Standards seldom standardize anything.

Standards only seem to create dissention. Those woo create the standard thing it is great. Those who have the standard imposed upon think it is burdensome and is unnecessary.

Words are only letters arranged to mean what you think they mean.

What most people leave unsaid is more important than what is said. What is often unsaid is more true than what is said.

When I talk, I am well tolerated. When I stop talking, it is as if I never spoke.

People treat spoken words much in the same way that they tread (or would like to treat) the speaker.

Life is much like commuting. One starts off down the road, knowing where they want to go and a plan of how to get there. Yet life, like commuting, is greatly influenced by a variety of factors. Oftentimes the trip doesn’t go as planned. Sometimes in attentiveness causes minor or major complications. Other times it is either the action or inaction of others that cause problems.
Like life, arrival at the anticipated destination is never assured until one reaches it. The choices made are based on the information at hand. How often it is said, “If only I would have known what was around the corner, I would have made a different decision”.
However, unlike commuting, life is lived once. It is a one-time trip. Many choices are made along the way. Not all of the choices made require action. Some choices are made by deciding to do nothing.

Words are an extension of the individual. Some words are truthful and other words are deceitful.

No matter where you go or what you do, there will always be someone of lesser ability or talent either before you or above you.

Never volunteer any information that is not beat out of you. This accomplishes two things. First, it allows the other person to feel superior by forcing you to do something you didn’t volunteer to do. Second, if the other person wanted someone to listen to, they would do the talking.

The way some people write is an insomniac’s dream.

Debt – what people have because they don’t have a plan.
Debt – what people have because they don’t want to wait.

The emotional swing knows no balance. It goes from one extreme to the other with only a push.

Diminutive is a big word for little.

Expertise is built upon mastery of basic principles.

Expertise is built upon mastery of the fundamentals.

Commonly accepted errors soon become the accepted standard.

Don’t let your wisdom limit your understanding.

Don’t waste your time trying to correct what you aren’t paid to do.

The more one has, the more one has to lose.

Those who have obtained information, and are insecure, try to keep others from learning what they know.

A warning to those who build paper empires, it may be used as fuel to burn you.

My greatest downfall is my ability to be sidetracked on several projects simultaneously.

Your smile is only on the outside.

The mind distorts all visual images, either positively or negatively.

The sunrise was spectacular! The clouds had lost their reddish hue and had assumed their puffy white/gray color pattern. The risen sun disappeared behind a tall columnar cloud. The sun illuminated the cloud and created a brilliant golden outline of the cloud.

Changing
I was happy where I had been working. I had been there for over 10 years and had no thought of changing or leaving. I was content in my job and confident in my abilities. Then the changes started. My boss for the last 5 years stepped down. He had become fed up with the way things were and wouldn’t take it any longer.
During the search for a new head of Publications, my former boss’s boss ran things. He didn’t understand publications, but that didn’t matter, he just ran things “his way”. This acting head picked the next head of publications. He did not choose me or another writer in the department. We were dismissed because of his perception of our abilities. Only one applicant was interviewed and he was selected.
It was the new supervisor’s lack of ability, both technical and managerial, that forced me to look for another job.
I sent out several resumes, but to no avail. I attended a job fair on a whim and landed my present job.

It is only a good idea when you can convince others to do it that way.

It takes determination to fulfill a dream.

It takes money to pursue a dream.

Even a nice pain is a pain.

Attitude and atmosphere are 95% of the job.

Those with the least understanding are often placed in the position to make decisions that affect the greatest number of people.

Those who are to be successful must pursue a task to completion with the same vigor as was present at the start.

Those who wish to be successful must pursue a task to completion with the same vigor as was present at the start.

Confusion only occurs when information is tried to be understood.

It is difficult to ascertain what emotional, psychological, and physical effect one individual has on another while in the midst of a relationship. It is only after the relationship has ended that the relationship can be viewed in its true light.

I heard your voice again and all of those unhealthy emotions started to churn once again. So, I hung up the phone and a few minutes later, all was back to normal.

This morning, I had a dream that I left my former place of employment (even though I hadn’t been employed there for over 12 days). My leaving was cordial and emotional, much different than it was in reality.
My mind created for me what reality had denied me. There were hugs, tears, smiles, kisses, and caring. My former boss even had four huge Christmas stockings as a gift to me and my family. (He hates Christmas!)

Fear – when the mind prohibits the body from doing what it needs to do for survival.

Ignorance is best left undisturbed.

An error is most obvious to those who didn’t make it.

The overall good points are seldom seen until the glare from trivial difficulties is eliminated.

Configuration Management is necessary to prevent everyone from chasing the others’ tail.

If those who do the job the first time do it properly, when it becomes time to update the project, the work is relatively easy.

People who are the most helpful are often the least help.

If I can’t work, I might as well learn.

Knowledge only clouds simple understanding.

Promises are neither binding nor productive.

Maps of the future are still hand drawn.
